MONROVIA, CA. (August 30, 1999) - ParaSoft, a leading provider of software error prevention and error detection solutions, announced today that IBM Global Services, a division of IBM UK, has been successfully using Insure++, ParaSoft's automatic runtime error detection tool for C and C++, since 1997.

The IBM division first brought Insure++ aboard to assist in developing a suite of electricity billing programs for UK Electricity companies. The development lasted 18 months, and consisted of more than 150,000 lines of C code. The internal company billing system is now used by five UK Electricity companies.

"Insure++ probably saved a third of the development time after we installed it," says Peter Jennings, IBM senior software engineer. "In about an hour, it found a fault that we had spent more than a week looking for with an ordinary debugger. After that we used Insure++ all the time to make sure we didn't make the mistakes in the first place."

An award winning tool, Insure++ checks all types of memory references including those to static (global), stack and shared memory. It finds memory corruption and memory leaks as well as errors allocating and freeing dynamic memory.

"We had problems with the software that we couldn't trace," says Jennings. "So we started looking for software tools that would work under AIX. Insure++ was about the only one available. We evaluated a demonstration copy and bought it."

Jennings' new development team is now using Insure++ in another large project, an internal directory system for storing information about people, which will eventually be used for e-commerce purposes. This large directory system is not limited to storing information about IBM employees, but is also used by a number of other companies as their repository. There are currently about one million people referenced in the address book.

When Jennings joined this project, it had already been in existence for some time. Upon Jennings suggestion, Insure++ is now used both to clean up the existing code, as well as checking code in new developments. Its ease of use and efficiency have made Insure++ a must have for IBM Global Services.
